Richard Hurley has been involved with Folkmoot for 27 years, starting with an emcee role for a Festival event in 1989. After his first festival experience, he was hooked. Richard joined the Board of Directors in the 1990s, served on the Executive Committee, and chaired the Nominating Committee for a number of years. He has also been an emcee at many of the festival’s Galas, Opening Performances, and Candlelight Closings.
“I have seen multi-generations of dancers from across the globe perform on the many Folkmoot stages – and – I have seen firsthand the camaraderie and peaceful friendships that the festival engenders,” said Hurley.
Richard’s favorite thing about Folkmoot is the Candlelight Closing Ceremonies where he annually witnesses peaceful multiculturalism as the festival comes to a close. He believes that this particular festival event is a priceless memory that focuses on what Folkmoot is truly about, bringing people of different cultures and backgrounds together as friends.
Rolf Kaufman, Chair of Group Relations said, “In his capacity as emcee, Richard has been the “face of FOLKMOOT” and its spokesman. In this role, Richard has expertly communicated the primary aim of FOLKMOOT, which is to acquaint people with the traditions of other lands, as well as to familiarize local youth with the world around us. Richard also emphasizes the opportunity given to our visiting performers to become acquainted not only with our local population but also with the traditions of other countries represented at the Festival.”
