Unsung heroes all, school bus drivers have a tough job and by driving 21 years for Haywood County Schools Gary Pittman has logged half a million miles – plus Folkmoot.
Gary has also driven around visiting Folkmoot dance troupes for over have Folkmoot’s three decades.
He was honored recently by Haywood County Schools for reaching the almost inconceivable milestone of logging 500,000 miles behind the wheel of Haywood school buses.
“His unwavering dedication and passion for his career has earned him the love and adoration of many students and staff,” said the school system press release. “In his work with Haywood County Schools, he drove more than 250,000 miles in bus 152, over 175,000 miles in bus 14, and is now driving bus 23. He loves being involved with many school activities, including Unified Cheer. He has driven for academic, athletic, and activity purposes.”
“Gary is always there with a smile and warm greeting,” said Folkmoot Executive Director Angie Schwab. “He’s always agreeable and ready to drive where ever he is needed. We couldn’t function during the festival without people like Gary, especially our entire dedicated corps of bus drivers.”
He may not have racked up a half million miles drive for Folkmoot but he’s added plenty to that grand total over the years.
